Rock Climbing at Beacon Rock

Beacon Rock is one of the Northwest's best-known traditional climbing walls, and climbing is allowed on parts of it under a state management plan. The northwest face is open all year. The south and southeast faces close every February 1 for nesting peregrine falcons and tentatively reopen in mid-July (the south face reopened July 9, 2026). The east face is permanently closed to protect rare species and cultural and historical resources.

Which Faces Are Open

Before every trip, read the alerts on the official park page; closure dates can shift with the falcons.

Why the Falcon Closures Matter

Washington State Parks closes these areas with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife during peregrine falcon nesting. Peregrines nest on high ledges, and repeated activity near a nest can make adults flush from their eggs, which can lead to a failed nest. Falcons have also dive-bombed climbers who got too close. Disturbing them carries a $500 fine. Peregrines came off Washington's endangered list in 2016 but are still protected by state law and the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The Climbing Management Plan

The rules come from the Beacon Rock State Park Technical Rock Climbing Management Plan, linked from the official park page. It sets the approved climbing areas. The park map marks a Climber's Trail and technical climbing areas on the rock.

Practical Notes

Good For / Maybe Skip If

Good for: experienced trad climbers with their own gear and partner. Maybe skip if you are new to climbing: these are trad routes that need your own gear and experience. For the summit view without gear, hike the Beacon Rock Trail.
